You have a point, Markus, the metadata doesn't record what drive mode I was in - it could well have been on high burst, 8fps. I tried to visualise how long it would take a swan to take off.
Eadweard Muybridge, eat your heart out! It looks like the camera was stationary when these shots were taken. It might be fun to repeat the process while panning, although this would tend to involve a slower shutter speed. I feel a series of studies coming on...

Can you elaborate on how you did this - is it 7 individual shots stitched together in photoshop?

Yes it is seven consecutive shots taken on low-speed continuous mode (3 shots/sec) and then put together in Photoshop.
