Puffin Parade for Meredith

We booked on the all-day trip to the Farne Islands yesterday and were very lucky that the weather there was reasonable all day. I decided before I got there not to photograph many puffins but, somehow, they found their way into my collection of images. Such comic and yet beautiful birds - can one really have too many momentos?

Beaumaris I. Cruise Around Puffin Island

Beaumaris Pier is functional rather than decorative with lots  of railings where crab fishing and Jellyfish spotting can take place . The cruise took us along the shore past the Penmon Quarry with its deserted buildings to the Penmon Lighthouse with its cottages with their tall chimneys (very reminiscent of the Happisburgh, Suffolk, buildings). We then did a circuit of Puffin Island which lived up to its name though most Puffins have already left to spend the winter on the North Atlantic. We also got close to several Grey Seals.

Farne Island Puffins in the Rain

We had mixed weather on a day trip to the Farnes yesterday. The Puffins certainly looked a bit miserable in the heavy showers. I loved watching them take off - amazing those little wings give so much lift. The obligatory images of Puffins with sand eels - certainly didn't seem to be any shortage. Finally a couple of portraits.

Puffin on the Farne Islands

Everyone else's puffins seem to be able to get their sand eels in a tidy row while mine had them all in a mess - some heads towards me and some tails but I did like the bit of movement on the wings and the glancing light.
