Eclipse 12th August 2026

The last total eclipse visible in the UK was 1999 (and the next with equivalent totality in June 2151!) so yesterday's event was quite significant though not as spectacular as a lot of people who gathered on the highest point in Toft were expecting with the hype from the media. Certainly the light values fell at the time of totality and the colour of the light moved to the bluer end of the spectrum. 

Partial Eclipse

There was quite a lot of high cloud around for today's partial eclipse but this added to the atmosphere in many ways. It did make consistent exposure quite a challenge. Not a perfect sequence of stages as sometimes the cloud was too dense but enjoyed the challenge. I used a 10-stop ND filter 1/8000th at F22.

Lunar Eclipse and Wolf Moon

I am sure there will be plenty of images of tonight's spectacular full moon. It coincided with a  penumbral lunar eclipse, which happens when the sun, moon and earth are perfectly aligned. The Earth's outer shadow fell on the moon and made it look a bit darker than normal. The January full moon is called a Wolf moon.

One of the advantages of looking after Sadie and Meredith while Ellie and Matt are having a holiday is that there wasn't much chance that I would not be awake for the Total Eclipse. A clear night so a beautiful view of the colour changes leading up to totality.
