A few images taken on the Third Thursday Walk at Paxton. A warm day so a few insects around including a Bee-wolf Wasp, Brimstone, Robber Fly and Southern Hawker, the Great Crested Grebes and the Common Terns were busy fishing and feeding their young, Tufted ducks have returned, while up to 6 Little Egrets have taken up residence with the Grey Herons.

Banded Demoiselles - Life and Death
I spent a long while last week with the Banded Demoiselles at Trumpington enjoying their iridescent colour that changes from green to blue in sun and shade and was just enjoying this male when a Kite-tailed Robber Fly swooped down and carried it off into the bushes. It hung onto its prey despite me moving it to a more open position - a sad end for the Demoiselle! Other images - female demoiselle and male Banded Demoiselles displaying on the water lilies at Byron's Pool

RSPB Sandy - Dragonflies and Other Insects
The heather-covered sandy heathland plus the gardens with their pond supports a very varied insect population. Here a few species for whom the higher temperatures pose no problems. Lots of Dragonflies in the sky and occasionally landing: Migrant Hawker, Ruddy Darter and Red eyed Damselfly. Others shown - Grasshoppers, Hoverflies, Plant Bugs, Sand Wasp, Robberfly and Chloropid fly.
