On Sunday last, Jonathan and Sue led an RPS East Anglia outing to the Open University Campus at Milton Keynes and set us 8 topics - Motion, Differential Focus, Detail, Reflection, High Contrast Monochrome, Natural, Multiple Exposure and Open Choice, all in Square format. A bright sunny day and I gave my Canon converted Infra Red camera an outing. Here is a set of 'colour' images from the day (monochrome to follow) - leave you to guess the categories!

On Saturday, we had an East Anglia RPS and CCC outing to Wimpole Hall. I suggested a few projects to try at various locations around the Park, including long exposures. It was cloudless when we set off for our walk but clouded over very rapidly at lunchtime giving lots of opportunities for cloud trails, using a 10-stop neutral density filter to give a shutterspeed of 25 secs. Last two images are as we left in the afternoon (having visited the inside of the Hall) when the sun started to break through the clouds again.

I walked back across London Bridge and along the North bank of the Thames as the path remains by the river on that side, taking images wherever I could find a flat surface to rest the camera. I then crossed the Millenium Bridge and the last 4 images are taken from the top of the Tate Modern. Images are not all totally sharp as it was cold and windy and I had forgotten gloves!

It looked as if the rain was easing as we pulled into King's Cross, but as I left the station the heavens opened and continues to pour for the walk from King's Cross to St. Paul's. First image out of sequence but thought it would make a great 'give it a caption' image!

1. The colours seen in a soap bubble arise from interference of light reflecting off the front and back surfaces of the thin soap film. Depending on the thickness of the film of soap, different colours interfere constructively and destructively.
2. Dichroic cubes have several surfaces that transmit light of a certain waveband and reflect its complement. They have dielectric coatings that result in a steep transition between the region of transmission and reflection, which is sensitive to the angle of view - hence these clear cubes appear multicolour viewed with a white light source
3. A CD is made up of thousands of pits arranged in the form of spiral tracks. When visible light is incident on the pits, each pit diffracts light in all directions. They act as a diffraction grating separating a light into its constituents forming rainbow colours. The colours that overlap are seen brighter than the colours that cancel each other.
