Southend Before the Storm

I took a walk along the front at Southend before giving a talk at Hadleigh Camera Club - always a difficult location to photograph with the mile-long pier but some late sunshine and impressive skies prior to a very violent rainstorm later helped the compositions. I couldn't resist the new versus old toilets or the rather starling moulting from fluffy juvenile to resplendent spotted winter adult.

Starlings Leave Roost (Brighton 20th January )

Still catching up on images from trip to Brighton. This was my last morning when my planned walk from Brighton along towards Shoreham was a bit delayed by the wonderful spectacle, first of the starlings leaving the old West Pier and flying off over Hove and then by the colours of the sunrise.

Regency Brighton and Palace Pier

Regency describes the years from 1811 to 1820 during which George III was judged to be incapacitated and his son, the Prince of Wales, acted as Regent. Architecturally, however, it flourished for more than three decades until it gradually withered during the reign of William IV. One of its main protagonists was John Nash, who transformed the Prince’s more modest pavilion with an amalgam of Mogul Indian, Scottish Baronial and Chinoiserie features. Palace Pier was opened in 1899 so of a later period but it fits well with the Regency buildings of the Old Steine area immediately inland with the dominant domes of the Royal Pavilion.

Brighton Murmurations

The starling performed really well on Thursday evening gathering in huge mobile flocks around Palace Pier , sometimes flying up again but finally settling.

Brighton Sunrise

Very colourful sunrise yesterday morning - just enough cloud to give interest to the sky and some good pools to reflect it in. Several groups of swimmers braved the water while the air temperature was well below freezing

West Pier Sunset, Brighton

After a rather disrupted train journey due to flooding and landslips, I arrived in Brighton in time for a very beautiful sunset. The West Pier is the roosting choice for a very large number of seagulls and I was also surprised how many people were sitting on the beach watching the sunset. I have a couple of nights here - the legacy of a postponed lock-down booking.
