RPSB Sandy on the Hottest Day

We  visited RSPB Sandy on the hottest day so far of the year - my car registered 34 degrees on a hunt for Bee-wolf Wasps and other interesting insects. After a fairly long wait (fortunately in the shade) a Beewolf arrived carrying its honeybee prey but was unable to locate the exact position of burrow making many repeat visits so we had opportunities to photograph it over half an hour. The other bee-catching wasp, the Ornate Digger Wasp was found nectaring on Fennel along with several other attractive species including Cinnamon Bug, Ant Damsel Bug and Western Conifer Bug, species that are rapidly spreading north with global warming. There were dragonflies in the air so not surprised to photograph a Hobby hunting in the distance.

Exciting Day at Rutland

A day of drama at Rutland Eggleton Nature Reserve with the RPS Nature Group both in the weather - thunder and lightning included - and the target birds - Hobby, Osprey and Cuckoo. Not quality photos by a long way but may give an idea of the action in sunny and cloudy skies (we failed to catch an Osprey with background lightnings flashes in a photo!). At the end, Reed and Sedge Warblers, Wren and Reed Buntings that tantalised us with brief visible moments in the reeds)

RSPB Sandy Bugs, Fungi and Hobby

Yesterday was the RPS Nature Group outing to RSPB HQ at Sandy. It was postponed from previous week and the weather was slightly improved as largely dry but still windy and cool. However, we did manage to find a good selection of plant bugs, crickets, butterflies and  dragonflies.  Mike and I took an early morning walk round and spotted a Hobby and quite a few unseasonably early fungi.
