Gateshead Attractions Were Closed

On Tuesday, I decided to go to the Quays area of Gateshead/Newcastle as I knew it well from our week there in 2012 and wanted to do some photography in the Baltic Contemporary Centre and the wonderful Sage building. Unfortunately the Sage was closed to the public and the Baltic had only one Gallery open. I had an enjoyable day photographing what I could in the area and walking into Newcastle city centre and back over the High Bridge.

Magpie Day

We had a tour round ST. James Stadium and guess what - everything is black and white.

Steps and Tunnels

Newcastle being built on hills has lots of steps and tunnels.

Reflections on the Tyne Two

A second go at the reflections. No real sunset tonight as there was a heavy bank of cloud on the horizon but the water was stiller. The first image was taken at 21.20 and the last at 21.42 so there is such a short window to capture the balanced light conditions.

People Day

We bought a Metro Day card and went to Sunderland, then to South shields where there was a bric a brac market, across the Tyne by ferry to North Shields and then back to Newcastle. I tried a bit of candid people photography - not an easy thing where no-one else had a camera.

Sunset on the Tyne

A series of photos taken as the light faded and the lights came on. We need another trip as a boat went through at just the wrong time and spoilt the reflection in the last image.

The Sage Gateshead

The Sage Building in Gateshead, designed by Norman Foster, is very difficult to photograph well from the outside as it faces north and therefore against the sun for most of the day. Thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of photographing the exterior and the interior of the building.
