For several nights, I have observed a Barn Owl coming out of the field next to our garden at around 18.15 so last night I took a camera and spent time tracking it around the field by the Hardwick Road and was delighted to see it joined by a second Barn Owl though by then it was too dark to get any type of quality image.

Welney: Barn Owls
We spent the afternoon at Welney with the Barn Owl(s) - there are several pairs roosting around Lady fen so a good chance of seeing them out hunting in the daylight. Not technically good images as at a distance for my lens but hopefully gives the feel of these wonderful birds on a sunlit afternoon. The last two were taken into the low sun and show a successful catch which the owl managed to get back to its barn despite three 'pirating' kestrels.

Welney - Moon Set, Sun Rise
Members of the RPS Nature Group attended the Swans Awake event at Welney WWT yesterday and witnessed the setting of the full moon as the sun rose to give us a bright clear day for the rest of our time at the reserve. Here a few images to give the atmosphere; unfortunately the wind direction meant the swans departed away from us except for a few groups. The Barn owl over the bank was a great addition and later would become the focus of our photography.

Paxton Pits Snow, Ice and Birds
With the Pits themselves frozen, the water birds have congregated by the river, while smaller birds are struggling to find food in the snow covered vegetation. Only the Heron remained on Hernonry South Lake. The Barn Owl was out quartering around midday while the Goldcrest was tirelessly hunting on the river bank. Bright sunny day so the views were magical with the ice patterns and frost on top of snow

Barn Owl at Dawn
I encountered this Barn Owl on my early morning walk on Saturday. It was still quite dark especially with the tall hedges where it was hunting but still a great joy to see. It came very close at times but I wasn't able to focus on it.
