We spent the rest of Sunday morning (after a breakfast in the cafe!!), general bird watching and 'snapping' on the main reserve so here a flavour of the session and including Cattle Egret and ?Chiffchaff (a pair were flitting in the bushes - presumably overwintered in UK).

Welney - Moon Set, Sun Rise
Members of the RPS Nature Group attended the Swans Awake event at Welney WWT yesterday and witnessed the setting of the full moon as the sun rose to give us a bright clear day for the rest of our time at the reserve. Here a few images to give the atmosphere; unfortunately the wind direction meant the swans departed away from us except for a few groups. The Barn owl over the bank was a great addition and later would become the focus of our photography.

Wicken Fen with RPS Nature Group
A dull grey day on Saturday made photography difficult with high iso requiring noise reduction. The star was definitely the Little Owl pair. It was also good to see a tree creeper and, of course, the roe Deer and Konig ponies.

Brighton Trip: Birds and Concrete
The final post from my birthday trip to Brighton and two favourite subjects: birds and concrete.
I did not remember Fulmars on the cliffs in Sussex from my keen birdwatching teenage years but there is now a very large colony on the cliffs at Ovingdean and research confirmed that they were not recorded as breeding until 1976. They were very busy setting up nest sites and territories as expected in January when they return from the sea.
My other interest well supported on this trip is concrete architecture (there is a Concrete Appreciation Society so I am not alone!!) The new town hall in Hove was built by John Wells-Thorpe in the Brutalist architecture style, predominantly out of concrete clad and was officially opened in 1974.

Hove Buildings etc (Jan 20th)
On my last morning, I walked along towards Shoreham s the sun came up and then back via Hove town looking at the buildings - such a range of architectural styles including a rather splendid Tescos!
