RPS Nature Trip to Norfolk Heathland

The Silver-studded Blues appear to be coming to the end of their season at least 2 weeks earlier than last year though we did find a few fairly newly emarged butterflies. There were plenty of other insects and spiders to photograph.

Cyanotype printing onto Fabric

I had a preliminary go at printing Cyanotypes onto fabric - here a piece of sheeting that I then sewed onto a garment. Next stage to try direct onto a T-shirt!! It was exposed in sunlight for about 15 minutes and then washed until the water stayed clear- the yellow  and orange are turmeric and paprika.

Hummingbird Hawkmoth

This wonderful moth visited our garden and put on a great display The light was not great being under an apple tree so I could only get  shutterspeeds of a 1/2000th (most) and 1/1000th (images 2 and 7). The body is kept amazingly stable with very flexible wing movements

Burnham-on -Sea

A few images from a visit to Burnham-on-Sea on my way to Bristol on a very sombre overcast day. Burnham-on-Sea is part of the second longest beach in Europe with the iconic low lighthouse,  the remaining active lighthouse of three Burnham lighthouses  Whilst Burnham has one of the longest expanses of sand, it has the shortest pier in Britain.

Dorset 18 Hooke Park - Final Location!

Although not a great set of images as it was very windy and raining a bit so wide aperture/slow shutterspeed needed and no chance of focus stacking, this blog past records Hooke Park, close to Higher Kingcombe, as a great location for a future visit to Dorset. The Stilt Bug was definitely one of the strangest insect encountered during my 10 days!!

This Year's Marbled Whites

Since we first recorded marbled Whites in Toft Wood in 2012, they have roosted in the clearing in large numbers (35-40 counted this year). They are at least a week earlier than previous years (we were away when they were first observed around 16th June. Here a variety of early morning shots with dew still on the butterflies as they climbed to the tops of plants to warm up in the sun.
