Norfolk Hawker and Waders at Winterton

There are several small ponds in the dunes at Winterton adn one had a very obliging Green-eyed (Norfolk) Hawker, shot here at 1/2000th with mechanical shutter. Along the shoreline were several dunlin and ringed Plover, the latter with young. Spiders and seals completed the wildlife parade.

Birds on Brownsea Island

We visited Brownsea Island yesterday on a bright sunny day but with a very strong northerly wind. Red Squirrels were sheltering and were not seen but the hides over the lagoon produced some sightings including Greyshank and Redshank, Avocet and Black-tailed Godwit. The Black-headed and Mediterranean Gulls (black heads and no black on primaries) were beginning to pair up. Most exciting view was of a Peregrine repeatedly flying at the flocks of waders.

Waders and Wildfowl at Welney

One of the most spectacular sights at Welney are the large flocks of Black-tailed Godwits and Lapwings that rest of the islands on the wash, taking to the air every time a Marsh Harrier or other raptor passed overhead.

Stars of RSPB Blacktoft Sands

The RPS Nature Group outing to Blacktoft Sands RSPB reserve near Goole produced some great close views of commoner waders (including Blacktailed Godwit),ducks etc plus one star species, White-winged Lapwing (last image - an accidental from Iran), at a distance. It was very cold and icy there and 4 of the 6 hides produced no birds at all but was compensated by these great views (all quickly converted from Raw files - will process fully when home and replace)
