This Year's Marbled Whites

Since we first recorded marbled Whites in Toft Wood in 2012, they have roosted in the clearing in large numbers (35-40 counted this year). They are at least a week earlier than previous years (we were away when they were first observed around 16th June. Here a variety of early morning shots with dew still on the butterflies as they climbed to the tops of plants to warm up in the sun.

Dorset 15 Early Morning Contrasts

One of the joys of staying at Higher Kingcombe is the opportunity to photograph early in the morning either in the meadows above the Lodge to get the first rays of sunshine or around the lakes below to catch the insects covered in due. Here some comparisons of shots during the week. Most are 'if only' shots so plenty of reason to return.

Dorset 10: Higher Kingcombe Lodge and Lakes

Our stay at Kingcombe has come to an end though my posts for the rest of the trip will continue for a few days more! It is wonderful place to stay for anyone wanting tranquility, lots of wildlife to watch and photograph, very comfortable self-catering or bed and breakfast and very friendly owners (also fishing!!). I went out early on several morning - here a post from one such visit as the mist rises and then dissipates with the rising sun and the colours strengthen and worm in tone. The damselflies and other reed-life covered in dew are a constant challenge! Higher Kingcombe Lodge

Easter Sunday Sunrise

I went on an early walk from home to photograph the full moon setting but it was too misty to see it so I  concentrated on the sunrise, which proved to be a very colourful one!!  The dew on the wheat and flowers added another subject for the walk though meant I arrived back with very wet feet and trousers..

Sunrise in the Nene Valley

I was out early on Sunday to witness the sunrise through the mists in the Nene Valley - a magical experience shared with a Great Crested Grebe pair, Geese, Swans and a Grey Heron. The landscape panorama (23mm lens) and the telephoto closeup (400mm) were taken at the same time and show different aspects of the lighting.
