Preliminary Ultraviolet Photographs

I have been playing around with UV Fluorescence photography using a UV torch. The UV light is absorbed into the subject and visible light is re-emitted and can be captured by the camera. I was handholding the camera and using shallow depth of field so the results are not that sharp.

Long Exposures Through the Day

Final series of long exposures from our London trip. These weren't taken on the same day but are in approximate time order though the sky conditions were different on the three days. First three images are all at 30secs with the 'big stopper' neutral density filter; Westminster Bridge 20secs (very impressed Phil stood still for most of the exposure), next two 15seconds and last two 60 seconds when fully dark.

Wimpole Christmas Lights Trail

This is the first time Wimpole Hall (National Trust) has organised a Christmas Lights Trail. We visited on Sunday and came away with mixed feelings. It is certainly very bright and festive with lots of very clever modern technology both in light and sound. The main drawbacks were the very large number of visitors combined with the narrowness of the paths meant that there was a lot of queueing and you were too close to the exhibits (for people with sensitive eyes it was uncomfortable in many areas). For me, the best exhibits were the 'standard' coloured lighting of trees and features and the lighting of the Hall itself.

Cambridge Blue Hour

Our group of photographers met up on Saturday in time to cover the 'so-called' Blue Hour when it is possible to balance the light in the sky with any artificial lighting. On a sunny day, it happens when the sun's elevation is between -4 degrees and -6 degrees, just below the horizon line either before sunrise or just after sunset, ranging between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the weather. Here are my series of images taken between 16.15 and 17.15 on an overcast day.

Workshop on Flash Techniques

Yesterday evening, Toft Photogroup and CCC had a photography evening in Toft Churchyard practising various flash and night photography techniques.  Zoe came along with her black and irridescent angel wings and white fans and feathers. The three church images are comparable exposures - first with the security lights on, then unlit and finally lit by light painting with a handheld flash gun. The first and second images of Zoe are single flashes while the third and fourth images are long exposures with several flashes during the exposure.
