Welney WWT Faces Up to Storm Dennis

I was very disappointed that I was not able to show off the delights of Welney in good light and pleasant working conditions to the Nature Group members, who came from many parts of the country to visit Welney WWT on Saturday, many taking part in the Swans Awake and Hares events. Here a few higher key images of the ducks and swans braving the wind and waves. The Little Egret made three attemps to cross the open water before finally making it. The swans, being a lot heavier, managed to navigate the open water but still often made several attempts to land.

Whoopers at Welney

Always a delight to watch the Whoopers on their return to their winter HQ and yesterday had the added bonus of very varied lighting conditions from the very soft lighting when there was cloud cover to the brilliant side lighting in the sunshine. The Whoopers must feel very much at home as, at the moment, the area between the two Bedford rivers is flooded. Images of the landscape and the other inhabitants to follow

Welney Trip December 29th - Best of the Rest

Due to the morning rain and poor light, we didn't get a lot of images at Welney of Friday but always lots to observe including a Marsh Harrier putting up the flock Black-tailed Godwits. The end of the afternoon gave some beautiful lighting for the swans and also to try some slow shutter ducks.

Whooper Swan Dispute at Welney Wildfowl Trust

As the weather forecast promised, the morning rain and heavy cloud cleared in the afternoon to give some beautiful late light. Here a dispute between two Whoopers. I like the audience in the first two images. Unfortunately my favourite image, the second one with the nip, does not have the focus in quite the right place but good enough to show the story line with the triumphant swan celebrating with its mate at the end.

Welney Pastel Tones: 1. Swans and Geese

It waas a misty frosty morning at Welney on Monday producing some wonderful muted tones for the photographs of Whooper Swans and Greylags. The Mute Swan came into land a bit fast and overshot onto the ice doing a magnificent out of control slide.

Welney - Best of the Rest

Final images from the trip to Welney last Wednesday. It was perfect light for swan photography - very high light cloud giving diffuse sunlight. My lens was a bit short for the Black-Tailed Godwits but still love the patterns they make in the sky
