Annual Bluebell Walk

We visited Waresley wood on Monday to see how the Bluebells are doing this year. In one part of the wood they are fully out but there are other areas which will be at their best in a couple of weeks so another trip could be fitted in, hopefully in some kinder light. The bright sunshine gave difficult conditions but very enjoyable attempt!

Spring in Hardwick Wood Cambridgeshire

The spring flowers are pretty much on schedule in our local wood - the bluebells are a bit later than last year as they need another week or so to be a full carpet. The Oxlips are at their best and are extra large and full of flowers - probably the result of the very wet winter being a specialist of boulder clay soils.  The wood is still very muddy underfoot. The cowslips just outside the wood are also very abundant this year. The birds are busy displaying and setting up nests etc - a very obliging wren and distant views of woodpecker, blackcap and nuthatch.

Bluebell Time in Hardwick Wood

I am so lucky that my local walking area includes a large woodland area, at this time, a carpet of bluebells. There are a few Early Spotted Orchids in flower among the bluebells.

Bluebells at Gamlingay Wood

We visited Gamlingay Wood on Friday afternoon (April 19th) and found the display of bluebells just about at its best. For the nature diary, recorded first Red Damselfly (seen in Toft garden on April 22nd) - very early as expected with current hot spell.

Bluebell Time at Waresley Woods, Cambs

The bluebells are extra good in the birch wood at Waresley this year. I chose a too bright afternoon to visit but enjoyed the smells and colours of the wood and trying a few soft focus views and camera rotations etc. They have sensibly deterred people from wandering in but there are plenty of viewpoints to try and record that illusive colour and shape.
