Garden Project 14

It is now 3 years since I started my wildlife garden and the various areas: front meadow with cowslips, flower beds with wild and cultivated species, the back wildflower beds with Red Campion, Hedge Garlic etc, woodland with Fritillarias, Yellow Archangel and Arum Lillies  and pond with Marsh Marigolds  all  appear to be fairly stable. 

Day 7 Akrotiri Peninsular

Our last full day in Crete was spent on the Akrotiri peninsular with visits to two monasteries with their vineyards, olive groves and wonderful gardens full of insects, spiders and plants. We finished at Stavros Beach where Zorba the Greek was filmed. 

Day 7 Chania Sunrise Coastal Walk

A few images from an early morning walk from our out-of-town hotel (previously the British Embassy) along the coast as the sun rose. A lot of buildings are derelict and there are wild flowers everywhere.

Day 6 Omalos Plateau

We are now in the north of Crete.  After the morning at Agia Lake, we drove up the long winding road to the Omalos Plateau (1200 metres) surrounded by mountains (2450 m) with patches of snow. I was treated to great views of an Eleanora's Falcon catching some small insect right above me. There were also around a dozen Griffin Vultures at one time, a Buzzard and a Golden Eagle that I didn't manage to catch in the lens. Lots of small birds at a distance (Stonechats, Northern Wheatears and Woodchat Shrike) plus lot of Wryneck calls.
