Swallowtail Butterflies

A wonderful experience today watching a dozen or more Swallowtail butterflies on Strumpshaw Fen. The warm sunshine brought them out and they fed on the brambles and irises, rested on the reeds and flew up in fighting groups. Disappointed not to get better flight pictures - will have to have another go.

More from Strumpshaw

A few other species from Strumpshaw. The Black-headed gulls were busy nesting while the Lapwings defended their territories and the Arctic Terns fished.

Not very sharp but I am pleased to add cuckoo to my photographed species.

Marsh Harriers at Strumpshaw

A few pictures of the Marsh Harriers at Strumpshaw Fen this morning. It was still very windy though quite bright with a few sunny intervals so a bit better for bird photography. With the wind, there were not many insects around - was hoping for the Swallowtail butterflies.

Fenland Railway

Some images of the Level crossing at Pymore - not sure how I will finally process and print the images but quite like this old feel to the photos - they remind me of the sort of prints that you see in some self-catering cottages that have been on the wall in the sun for a long time and faded

The Fens

Wonderful skies today after yesterday's heavy rain.
A few images here from my trip to Pymoor - thanks to Martyn and Tatt for their hospitality and I hope Photoshop is doing what you want!!

Lakenheath birds

A few pictures from today's trip to Lakenheath Fen on the way back from collecting work from the Gallery in Watton. The birds were a bit distant and there was a considerable heat haze. There were up to 6 Marsh Harriers and 10 Hobbies in the air at once some of the time. A wonderful sight. I am not sure what the Hobbies were feeding on as I only saw one damselfly (a red one) but the air was thick with Alderflies. There was also a Cuckoo in full song - the first I have heard this year.
