Although reduced in numbers from some previous years but there were around 8 Marbled Whites plus Meadow Browns and many skippers roosting in Toft Wood this week. There was also a very yellow Green-veined White, which was the second very yellow one that I have seen this year.

Male Marbled Whites Have Emerged
There were numerous Marbled Whites on Royston Heath this afternoon - all males and keen to feed on the Thistles. Red Kites flew overhead while a pair of mating Robber flies clung on to swaying grasses. The other chalk flowers were Knapweed-Broomrape, Bee Orchids, Clustered Bell Flower, Dropwort and seeds of the Pasque Flower

This Year's Marbled Whites
Since we first recorded marbled Whites in Toft Wood in 2012, they have roosted in the clearing in large numbers (35-40 counted this year). They are at least a week earlier than previous years (we were away when they were first observed around 16th June. Here a variety of early morning shots with dew still on the butterflies as they climbed to the tops of plants to warm up in the sun.

Marbled White Butterflies
As this morning dawned completely still, I took an early walk to local meadows to photograph Marbled White Butterflies waking up from their roost. The first six images are focus stacks of 25-40 images. It was great to have a male and female on a grass head which then moved to a carrot head to feed as they warmed up. The last two are taken with wide angle lens.

Marbled Whites and Southern Hawker Emergence Date
We recorded our first southern Hawker emergence from our pond and the first Marbled White in the wood meadow. This date 29th June is very close to the last two years - around 27th June; image taken with my phone so not great but a beautiful fresh male with creamy white and very dark brown markings. The garden has abundant Bombus hortorum at the moment

Larks Rise Insects 1
A few insects from the trip to Lark Rise Farm. As it was fairly cool and rain threatened during the latter part of the visit, the butterflies were quite docile - here a Comma, Large Skipper, Marbled White, Green Veined White and Small White. Lots of Beetles, Flies and Lacewing
