Playing With Colour Interference and Transmission

1. The colours seen in a soap bubble arise from interference of light reflecting off the front and back surfaces of the thin soap film. Depending on the thickness of the film of soap, different colours interfere constructively and destructively.
2. Dichroic cubes have several surfaces that transmit light of a certain waveband and reflect its complement. They have dielectric coatings that result in a steep transition between the region of transmission and reflection, which is sensitive to the angle of view - hence these clear cubes appear multicolour viewed with a white light source
3. A CD is made up of thousands of pits arranged in the form of spiral tracks. When visible light is incident on the pits, each pit diffracts light in all directions. They act as a diffraction grating separating a light into its constituents forming rainbow colours.  The colours that overlap are seen brighter than the colours that cancel each other.

CCC Workshop

Emma and Sophie were  wonderful models at a workshop yesterday, along with Zoe and Francoise and David (all also excellent). Eventually they will appear in all kinds of scenarios as the aim of the day was to create composite images but here a few images  for the girls from the camera. There will be many more from the participants on the day.

CCC Wednesday Workshop Intentional Camera Movement

Lots of camera swinging, panning and rear-curtain flashing occurred on Foxton Sports field last night as members of the camera club experiment with camera movement.

Aliens Visit CCC Workshop

We had an evening of creative photography concentrating on ICM (intentional camera movement), panning and in-camera multiple exposures. Several of us had fun with a disco ball - I seem to have aliens plus their planet of origin. We then tried to draw butterflies and letters using a street lamp as light source. Worryingly, I found this very easy which probably, like drawing perfect circles, denotes some strange mental abnormality! Lastly we had a go at multiple exposures.

Experiments with Strobe Flash and Bubble Refraction

Many thanks to Paul for an excellent evening last night when seventeen CCC Members had great fun using strobe flash for walking figure and for capturing large bubbles. I failed to get one popping but did enjoy trying and am intrigued by some of the results. Multiple flashes have produced psychedelic landscapes from alien planets - the stripes are Shelagh's sweater I think. Note the different techniques in producing good bubbles - Shelagh and Richard win for their athletic poses. We also photographed static bubble films for the colours but I didn't take a macro so one to try again.

Experiments in Portrait Lighting

A very interesting evening at CCC Portrait Group - my first visit to the group in a lot of years in the club. We were using mannequins rather than live models and I found it fascinating how just small changes in the light source, positioning of the model and, even, mode used in the camera (I had a film simulation on by mistake at some stage) affected the outcome. Certainly helped me appreciate the skills required on this genre a little more. Many thanks Clive for all the hard work that goes into such evenings.
