Toft 30th March Bees

The warm sun on Monday brought out lots of bee species iour Cambridgeshire garden, verges etc including several Andrena species, lots of Honey Bees (Apis mellifera) and also several Nomada species - striped parasites of mining bees laying eggs in their nests. Pleased to see my favourite Andrena - the Ashy Mining Bee with its silver grey hairs on body and bushy beard/moustache is on the wing. ID sheet at end.

Trumpington Meadows Monday 9th March

I visited Trumpington Meadows on Monday on a cool cloudy day so no high expectations of insect activity but some interesting finds in the woodland areas and great to see cowslips already in full bloom in places. Usual ID sheet at end - the beetle larva keyed out as a Rose Chafer but will need to check this one - found in nearby site so possible.

Snowdrops and Other Spring Flowers in Toft

These images were taken with a small Sony camera that was given to me as it wasn't working well. I gave it a good clean and then tested it at Toft churchyard which is turning white with snowdrops at the moment. Only saves in jpeg but will be a useful camera to carry with me as it has an impressive 20 times Zoom and can also do a reasonable macro shot.

Very enjoyable walk in the sunshine at Wimpole Estate yesterday morning wih my full-spectrum camera.

Toft Churchyard Lichens

Today's post definitely a preliminary look at what is growing on the walls and gravestones in our village church. They were very difficult to photograph handheld in not very good light. I will try again with some type of lighting to get sharper images for ID, The summary image at the end shows the IDs that various apps suggested - further shoots and comparisons of images should confirm or not these first attempts and then to check with other sources.
