Green Men at Ely

We visited Ely yesterday and spent a long while in the cathedral hunting Green Man symbols. A Green Man is a sculpture or other representation of a face surrounded by or made from leaves. Branches or vines may sprout from the mouth, nostrils, or other parts of the face and these shoots may bear flowers or fruit. There is a lot written about the origin of Green Man sculptures, many believing it is a pagan artifact derived from the ancient Celts' worship of the head. There is a trail leaflet that says there are over 70 Green men and animals but we only found  6 of the listed 12. Sadie and Meredith also enjoyed looking at the Christmas Tree and Great-great-great-great grandfather's plaque as Bishop of Ely .

Welney on a Dull and Windy Day

Although very windy and cold, the threatened rain held off till mid afternoon at Welney with reasonable light in the morning. Huge flocks of waders (Black-tailed Godwits here) and ducks took to the air on frequent occasions. One occasion proved to be a visiting White Stork (we had just put cameras away for lunch so only a grabbed shot as it receded into the distance). Although not seen with the eye, I caught a Peregrine in several frames as it patrolled the duck flocks. Working at ISO up to 3200 and shutterspeeds down to1000th, quality of images is not great but an enjoyable day with unexpected sightings!!

Walk round the Open University Campus 2.

The bright light on Sunday at the Open University Campus was ideal for high contrast monochrome especially when using infrared to bring out the sky details, shadows and reflections.
